There is a buzz in the village that is undeniable as we are mere days away from opening day at Sun Peaks Resort! But until you’ve lived in the heart of a ski resort as the lifts start spinning for another season, it’s a vibe that is truly hard to describe. But we’re sure going to try!
It starts in the village core with 30 minutes to go.
Perfect corduroy runs down the ski-through village, making a smooth line right to the base of the chairlifts. But before you get to the lift line, breathe in deep. The smell of roasting coffee and fresh cinnamon buns fill the air. From 540 Café to Bolacco and everywhere in between, locals cram in for a caffeine fix and quick breakfast to fuel the morning.
20 minutes to go.
In between hoots and hollers of excitement, there are other sounds filling the air. Wax machines doing a final tune-up of equipment before the lifts open for the day. Snow guns are whirring as a final coating of fresh snow coats the base area.
10 minutes to go.
And then the real energy hits when you get to the bottom of the chairlifts. Possibly one of the only times at Sun Peaks where you’ll find a line at the lifts, the base is packed with bright coloured jackets and snowpants as people gather together and form groups of four to ride the lift.
Final countdown. 5.4.3.2.1.
The clock ticks 9 am and a resounding cheer fills the resort as the first group of skiers and riders (who have been waiting in line for hours) load the lift and head up to make first tracks for the season.
